Today is Race Against Dementia Day, a cause that holds a place very close to my heart. As I celebrate my birthday today, I can’t help but reflect on the birthdays my grandad cherished; those that he could remembered clearly, and the ones he struggled to recall. Both very special and equally important. A reminder of the impact that dementia has on the ones affected, but also their loved ones.

Race Against Dementia Day is held annually and it is dedicated to raise awareness, serves as a reminder of the urgent need to push for research, and support families in the battle against this heartbreaking condition. Founded by Sir Jackie Stewart, a three-time Formula 1 World Champion, the initiative aims to accelerate the search for a cure by funding pioneering research and supporting innovative approaches to treatment. The event brings together people from all walks of life, from professional athletes to families affected by dementia, to take part in a range of activities that promote both physical fitness and mental well-being.

Dementia is one of the greatest challenges facing society today, affecting millions of individuals and their families worldwide. More than 55 million people around the world are living with dementia. Dementia affects the brain, causing problems with memory, thinking and behaviour. As it is a progressive disease, it gets worse over time. As the global population ages, diseases such as Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia continues to rise, and there is currently no cure.
